Liverpool-born television writer Philip Martin had already provided scripts for series such as Z Cars and New Scotland Yard in the early 1970s before the BBC screened his gritty, uncompromising Play For Today thriller Gangsters in 1975.

The hugely-successful and ground-breaking play spawned two six-episode series which starred Maurice Colbourne as an undercover agent infiltrating Birmingham’s seedy underworld.

In 1985 Philip began his associating with Doctor Who with the powerful two-part adventure ‘Vengeance on Varos’ which starred sixth Doctor Colin Baker and introduced the reptilian alien Sil, played by Nabil Shaban.

Martin returned to the series – as did Sil – with four episodes for the controversial ‘Trial of a Time Lord’ series in 1986 (which replaced Martin’s serial ‘Mission to Magus’ which was in preparation for the Doctor Who season aborted when the BBC put the series on ‘hiatus’ for eighteen months in the mid-1980s.)

Further TV credits have included episodes of ITV’s long-running Police drama The Bill, an episode of the short-lived BBC space drama Star Cops in 1986 and the arch BBC crime drama Virtual Murder in 1992.

More recently Philip has novelised his Doctor Who adventures and contributed to the ongoing Big Finish full-cast Doctor Who audio series.
