Not for nothing is Derek “Dez” Skinn sometimes referred to as “the British Stan Lee”; it’s almost impossible to over-estimate the importance of his contribution to the world of comics and magazine-publishing in the UK.

Dez started his career at IPC Magazines where he worked on iconic titles such as Whizzer and Chips and Cor! (“You can’t make a monkey out of Gus!”) and at Warner Brothers Publishing he edited titles such as Mad UK, Tarzan and Laurel and Hardy and, significantly, launched the fondly-remembered and award-winning House of Hammer.

In 1977 Dez independently created Starburst Magazine (whatever happened to? etc) before moving to Marvel UK to refresh and revamp the company’s raft of British titles.

Answering directly to Marvel legend Stan Lee Dez repositioned and reformatted Marvel UK’s output and launched numerous new titles including, in 1979, Doctor Who Weekly which survives and thrives to this day as Doctor Who Magazine.

In 1982 Dez launched Quality Communications and published the multi-award winning anthology title Warrior as well as the trade publication Comics International.

Passionate and outspoken and no stranger to controversy, Dez remains a leading light in the UK publishing world.

He is also the Honorary Editor of Starburst Magazine which he founded in 1978 (did we mention that?)
